13. Importance of Coolants (4-06-2006) Fact & Question: Coolant, coolant, coolant. Why all the emphasis on coolants?
Answer: First, here at Systec we do NOT sell coolants so we never take a position on what particular brands of coolants are best or what you should use. There are, however, some basic facts that relate to the importance of coolants that should always be considered. Coolants have a very important place in segmental grinding. They help to keep the part and segment cool, they can aid in accurate usage by eliminating work distortion due to heat, they can influence the form of chip by decreasing the effect of ductility of the metal being ground, they can protect the dressing tool from excessive heat, they can help to prevent rusting of parts and machinery, they can retard loading and glazing, and they help to carry away the chips. Proper coolant management is extremely important when considering any of the above areas for improvement in grinding performance. |

14. Friability
(4-20-2006) Fact and Question: One word that is constantly used in the grinding industry is the work “friability”. What is friability and what does it mean? Answer: Friability can be defined as “fracture toughness”. In simple words, the best abrasive for any grinding job is one that stays sharp while cutting and when dulling starts it breaks away (fractures) to reveal a new sharp cutting edge. It is extremely important that the manufacturer of segments, or any grinding wheel, understand the fracturing ability of the different grains he uses and their direct relationship to the hardness/toughness of the metals being ground. |

15. Sulfur Treatments (5-23-06) Fact and Question: There are various treatments that have been used in the grinding wheel industry for years. One of those treatments commonly associated with segments is “sulfur” treating. What is sulfur treating and why is it done? Answer: Sulfur treatment of segments is done for different reasons than on round grinding wheels. Sulfur is painted on the outside of the segments to seal the pores so that coolant does not penetrate the segment. The result is that the coolant is concentrated to the work piece. Sulfur has a very noxious smell and should only be used with flood coolants. Using coolants reduces the smell and will help to prevent smearing. Some people feel that sulfur treatment also helps in lubrication. Systec will sulfur treat segments upon request. |
